In light of the new CNN program Black in America 2 currently running on television, highlighting African American leaders and change-makers, I felt compelled to add my comments on the new model of black marriage and family before us everyday.
President Obama and Michelle Obama are what I call a Super Couple. They are individually and collectively very successful, intelligent, and articulate achievers. Together, they make a super dynamic couple. The fact that they are an African American couple is a great example to the world that yes, indeed, Black people can have and maintain loving relationships. Our media shows us far too many images of pathological relationship and community patterns among African Americans, and too few images of positive Black family life.
We have had examples over the years, The Huxtables, longtime real-life couple Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, but, the Obamas represent an outstanding model for the whole world to see. Their obvious love and affection for each other and the importance they place on their family unit does more to combat negative stereotypical images than all the “expert” panels and institutional studies combined.
In my business as a relationship mentor, I hear far too often the pain and disappointment of women who believe there are no good men left. To them I say, be encouraged, don’t fall for the okey-doke that the media presents or even the gossip of your girlfriends. Affirm for yourself that you can have whatever you desire to have. Don’t let yourself be defeated before you even start.
